A Restoration of All Things

The Visiting Teaching message for February is about “The Restoration of all Things”. It talks about the restoration of the Church, and the essential place of Relief Society therein. For my lesson I altered a drawing of a church from last year’s Primary Outline for Sharing Time. It is a lesson aid to help talk about Christ’s primitive Church, the Apostasy, and the Restoration of the Gospel. The only detail I changed from the original drawing is the heart in the center. It represents the faithful women in the ancient Church like Mary, Martha and Tabitha (all mentioned in this month’s VT message).

After you cut the church apart and discuss the Apostasy (when Christ’s Church, priesthood and revelation were taken away from the earth), put the pieces back together to signify the restoration of the Gospel.
Flip the center heart over to reveal the words, “Relief Society”, then read the following quote:

Sister Julie B. Beck has taught that “we know through the Prophet Joseph Smith that Relief Society was a formal part of the Restoration.” The process of restoration began with the First Vision in 1820 and continued “line upon line, precept upon precept” (D&C 98:12). When the Relief Society was formally organized on March 17, 1842, the Prophet taught the women about their essential place in the restored Church. He said, “The Church was never perfectly organized until the women were thus organized.

There are other great quotes in this lesson that you could also discuss, so be sure to prayerfully review the entire message and underline the things you’d specifically like to discuss with your sisters.
You can get your free download for February’s Visiting Teaching lesson aid here. It is a 2-page document, so you can print the church on the front of your paper, and “Relief Society” on the back. Be careful to print only page 1, then re-feed the paper into your printer upside down to print page 2. If this is a hassle, you could always just print page 1, then hand-write “Relief Society” on the back center of the paper. (Hold up to a window to align properly.)
I made another video below to talk a little about this month’s message – (Hello, world!) Don’t forget to comment on my last post to win a collection of visiting teaching cards. They are fun! Love you all and your sweet, wonderful comments. Thank you.

Visiting Teaching Card Giveaway

I am really excited (and a little nervous) to share something I’ve been working on for the last few weeks. I have really enjoyed sharing my visiting teaching ideas with you for the past 2 years. (2 years! The time has flown.) With the new year, I decided to stretch my creative muscles and design some printables I could sell online.

I just set up an Etsy shop with some fun cards to share with the sisters we visit teach. They are priced at 99 cents per card (or a collection of 5 cards is $3.99), and they are a sweet and fun way to share some love with each other.

They can be dressed up with a little paper or ribbon, but also look great as is. They are printed 4 to a sheet. You can cut them, add a personal message, and either hand deliver, stick in an envelope, or even print as a postcard.
The “Time Flies” card is one of my favorites – it’s a tentative appointment maker, and save the date card rolled into one.
It is helpful to occasionally give our contact information to our sisters, and I’ve shown a few possible ways to do this.

I printed some info on a pretty colored sheet of paper, cut to fit my cards, then stapled, glued, or sewed them on.

To celebrate the debut of my little shop, I’m giving away 5 digital downloads of this card collection. Visit my shop here, then leave a comment on this post telling me which card you like best. I’ll close comments on Monday, January 17 at 9 p.m. ET and post the winning names.
Thank you, as always, for being so kind and supportive.

New Sunbeams

My daughter is one of the new Sunbeams coming into Singing/Sharing time this year, and I am a little worried about how she will adapt to sitting during Primary – especially while I am up front. I found this idea on Sugardoodle:

Have little cut outs of an egg and have them sit on the eggs to keep them warm. If they get up, just say… “remember to keep your egg warm” at the end of class/singing time, or whatever. They can hand in their warm egg for a cut out of a chick. It’s worked really well! (Idea by Caryn in Atlanta)

I made some pom pom chicks and paper eggs to encourage the little ones to stay in their seats. We’ll see how it goes!

Appreciating the History and Heritage of Relief Society

The Visiting Teaching message for January is about the history and heritage of Relief Society. I made a paper doll chain that is meant to represent the connection we have to the sisters throughout history with whom we share membership in this amazing organization.

You can download the template here, which has with it some quotes and questions from the January 2011 message. Just accordion fold your doll, and cut out while keeping the edges of the hands intact, and you will have a darling set of 4 Relief Society sisters holding hands and hearts.

Here is a little video of me cutting my dolls – I thought it might be helpful if you’ve never cut paper dolls before:

Please leave a comment when you download the Visiting Teaching file, so I know if you love it! Thanks, and have a great 2011!

Tree Sing

Next Sunday I will bring out one of my old family home evening lessons to use in singing time. (You can click on the photo above to see the wording on all the ornaments better. ) Being that it is the day after Christmas, I will begin by asking who is planning on taking their tree down soon, then I will explain that even though we are putting ornaments and Christmas decorations away, we can still give “gifts to Jesus” all year long, as we serve one another. (Mosiah 2:17)

I will then pick helpers to come up and match the 2 sides of an ornament together, read the “gifts” on each, and sing a corresponding song. Here are a few examples:

ball ornament: “When my sister is sick and needs to rest, I read her the stories she likes best.” sing: “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus”

candle: “I made a special thank you card to give to my father who works so hard.” sing: “Daddy’s Homecoming”

gingerbread boy: “My brother needs help with his paper route, so I hop on my bike and we get them out.” sing: “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus”

gift: “I scrubbed and mopped the floor for the sweet widow living next door.” sing: “Fun to Do”

This activity came from the book, “Tons of Fun! Gospel Activities”, and as such, I’m not able to share a digital copy with anyone. It would be fairly simple, however, to use a miniature tree (or even a paper one) with hand-drawn ornaments of your own. Good luck, and hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

Sing a Story

This Sunday we will be doing a sing-a-story of Christmas (scriptures and song order came from “A Children’s Songbook Companion”). I have my nativity poster ready to go, using just 5 figures, that will be placed inside numbered envelopes. On the back of each figure there is a scripture written to help tell the story of the birth of the Savior. A child will come up, get the appropriate envelope, we will read the scripture, place the figure on the board and sing the song.

1 – Star: Helaman 14:2 (sing “Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus”)
2 – Joseph: Luke 2:1, 4-5 (sing “When Joseph Went to Bethlehem”)
3 – Mary: Luke 2:7 (sing “Away in a Manger”)
4 – Shepherd: Luke 2:8, 9-10 (sing “Stars Were Gleaming”)
5 – Baby Jesus: Luke 2:11 (sing “The Nativity Song”)

This will probably take 2 weeks to sing all the way through – especially since we are playing pipe chimes with “Stars are Gleaming”, and the children will want to sing it 10 times, until everyone has had a chance to hold a chime!

Paper Chain Song Countdown

I wanted to give the children a little reminder of the songs we are singing in Sacrament Meeting next Sunday, so made a paper chain to help them countdown the days, and practice at the same time. I am attaching 7 strips of paper to a note that reads:

Make a paper chain, alternating red and green strips. Every night, take off one chain and practice one of the songs we will sing in Sacrament Meeting next Sunday, Dec. 12th.
Red = Away in a Manger (CS 42)
Green = Mary’s Lullaby (CS 44)

I may do this again next year the week before the big Primary program, using a different color link for each song they will be singing!

Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus

This Sunday we will be learning “Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus” (CS 36). These are my visuals, and I plan to write out the chorus underneath them on the chalkboard. To introduce the song, I will bring a globe and point out the distances between America and Israel. We will tell the story of Samuel the Lamanite, and then how there was no satellite or cell phones to share information, how night was as day to show the Savior had been born. I will have the children beat the rhythm on their laps while I sing the first time through, then use discovery questions to learn the song.

Temple and Family History Work Paper Chain

The Visiting Teaching Message for December is about our responsibility to participate in temple and family history work. I made a paper chain to share with my sisters, with quotes from the message, along with some links for a family pedigree.

You can download the file here. I printed mine on colored construction paper, that I trimmed down to 8.5 x 11.

If you assemble your sisters’ paper chains during your visit, you will want to bring the links, a pen, and some adhesive. You could ask your sisters to fill in their generations as best they can while you introduce the message and explain the significance of the chain.

You can then link the chain together while discussing the different quotes.

Alternate the message links with the pedigree links, so they end up on the same side. You will also want to make sure the print is all faced in the same direction (so some links aren’t upside-down). You could also assemble your own chain before your visits to show your sisters, and then give them the unassembled version to complete on their own.

I’ve enjoyed thinking about this message the last few weeks, and hope you have great experiences discussing it with the sisters you visit teach. Happy Holidays to you all!

Mary’s Lullaby

We are starting Christmas music tomorrow! Our primary has been asked to sing in Sacrament Meeting December 12th, so we have 4 weeks to learn a couple Christmas songs. We will start with “Mary’s Lullaby” (CS 44) using the visuals pictured above. I’ll have the first verse scattered on the board, sing it through a couple times, then ask discovery questions while children come up one at a time to put the visuals in the proper order. We will do the same for the second verse next week.

The rest of our time we’ll choose songs from my “Give Thanks” poster that go along with this month’s theme. I plan to talk about how giving service is one way to show gratitude to our Heavenly Father.
