The visiting teaching message for August is entitled, “A Society of Holy Women“. Silvia H. Allred said, “The work of Relief Society is holy, and doing holy work creates holiness in us.” I love thinking of that connection between what we do and who we want to become; how our acts of service create dimension and spiritual complexity within ourselves. My visiting teaching aid is based on the following quote from the message:
“This society helps us strengthen our faith and grow spiritually by giving us leadership, service, and teaching opportunities. In our service a new dimension is added to our lives. We progress spiritually, and our sense of belonging, identity, and self-worth increases. We realize that the whole intent of the gospel plan is to provide an opportunity for us to reach our fullest potential.”
I have this quote printed on several strips of paper that have been trimmed out and hole punched at both ends. I might take out these strips as I begin the lesson and work together on getting the strips in the correct order, discussing the quote as we do so.
Once the strips are in order, stack them up and insert brads through both ends. This strip represents each of us as we begin our spiritual journey to holiness.
Begin pulling the strips of paper apart from each other – just swivel the top strip to the opposite side, and continue strip by strip until you have formed a ball.
Just as the strips of paper grew in dimension and interest with a few twists and turns, each sister who participates in building the kingdom of God by leading, serving and teaching can also become enriched and reach her full potential.
“Sisters, we are not isolated nor is our sphere narrow. By accepting the gift of activity in Relief Society, we become part of what the Prophet Joseph described as a society “separate from all the evils of the world—choice, virtuous, and holy.”
