Santa’s Beard Advent Calendar

The Young Women have been asked to provide a craft for our upcoming Ward Christmas party. We have several ideas floating around that we may use, but one of my favorites is this Santa’s beard advent calendar. I found the original idea here on Pinterest, and just slightly changed it up.

It’s great because it’s cheap, easy to reproduce, and a unique way to count down to Christmas – just snip off a line of Santa’s beard every day until you get to the top. I used college-lined filler paper for the beard, a 3/4″ circle punch for the nose and hat top, a 1″ punch for the cheeks and mustache (cut in half), and a standard hole punch for the eyes. I free-handed the hat and it’s trim. Then it’s just a matter of writing in the numbers and sticking it all together.

I would assemble in this order:

1. number the beard

2. Attach hat, then trim and top

3. Adhere eyes, then cheeks, mustache, then nose

of Moving and Counting

It could be ironic that I’m following the post about my favorite cookie dough with some thoughts on healthy living, or perhaps it’s more of a “cause and effect” situation! Regardless, I hope you don’t mind that I share some things that have been on my mind lately.

A year after delivering my sixth baby, I was holding on to an extra 50 pounds. I didn’t feel good, and had finally come to the point that I was ready to make some changes. I bought the Zumba DVD’s, started shredding with Jillian Michaels, and upped my speed walking routine. I started counting calories with the Lose it app, and lost most of my extra weight in about 5 months.

The last few months I have had a few pounds gradually creep back up on me – and I have come to realize that it is going to require an ongoing diligence to keep my weight in a healthy range. So today, the cookie dough has been polished off by the kids, the Halloween candy has been put in the no-temptation zone, and I am recommitting to making healthier choices.

The no-temptation zone: canned and in the spidery regions of our basement; some people can tomatoes – I prefer to can chocolate

I have had some interesting pins fly across my Pinterest feed lately, and have tried a few ideas. This morning I did the world’s fastest workout. I’m going to have to work on perfecting those squat thrusts, but that was an awesome 4-minute workout! I even felt energized enough afterwards to work on picking up our overwhelmingly cluttered craft/office space.

This is actually the AFTER photo. I still have a ways to go in here!

I tried this TV workout the day before. It feels great to do something, and to open the door for doing a little something more the next day.

The strangest thing I’ve tried this week, is the apple cider vinegar health drink. Let me tell you, it is nasty. I hold my breath and get it down as fast as possible, then chase it with a couple more glasses of water. If nothing else, it is helping me to get more fluids than ever before! There is also a psychological benefit of the drink for me; three times a day I am reminded of the choice I’ve made to eat and move better. I am less inclined to casually pop a sugary treat since I’m making this bitter-tasting effort towards better health.

I am back to counting calories with Lose it. It is a little annoying to have to track every bite, but it’s the only way I can shake off calorie denial, and really act responsibly with what I am eating. I love, love, love my sweets – but know it is a balancing act. Counting calories helps me see with greater clarity what a treat is really worth to me, and how I can fit that treat in to a healthier lifestyle. Once I stop counting, I stop caring, and things get out of control.

What are some things that help you to make healthy lifestyle choices?

The Best Cookie Dough

We are cookie dough connoisseurs around here. I adore this cookie dough with its sweet buttery crunchiness. It is awesome as a cookie, but really, the dough is where it’s at. The secret is in the cornflakes and coconut. There is even oatmeal in there. Heck, it’s practically a health food! Try it and tell me if you agree:

1 c butter, softened

1 c brown sugar

1 c sugar

2 eggs (substitute 1/4 c milk if making for dough-eating)

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

2 1/2 c flour

1 c oatmeal

1 c chocolate chips

1 c cornflakes

1 c coconut

Mix butter, sugars, eggs, and vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients until just blended. Stir in oatmeal, chocolate, cornflakes and coconut. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 – 15 minutes (or substitute milk for eggs, sit back and enjoy the dough).

Shores of Galilee Ornament

A friend of mine is hosting an ornament exchange party the first week of December, and I have gradually been collecting supplies to make a dozen “Shores of Galilee” ornaments. Inspired by this ornament, I asked my mom to collect some sand when she went to Israel last year.

The airport security people could not fathom why someone would want to bring a tupperware box of sand on an airplane, and reluctantly allowed her to bring this home to me. I was surprised to find the sand still very dark and moist when I opened this for the first time yesterday.

So I now have a cookie sheet full of sand, cooking at 200 degrees in my oven, trying to get dry enough to slide through a paper funnel and into a teeny tiny glass vial.

I should be able to get my halted assembly line going again tonight, to get the dozen for the party, and another half-dozen for my mom and daughters as a special keepsake of their own.

I love the sentiment on the original ornament, and will incorporate that into the packaging of the ornaments, (which I haven’t quite figured out yet)!

Remember, remember

try always to be

as the man who walked

the shores of Galilee

m&m game

A few weeks ago our young women planned a “dream guy” activity. We invited some of our secret grandmothers to join a panel discussion about finding their own dream guys. The girls had prepared questions for the panel members about how they met their spouses, what their dating experiences were like, what choices led them to the temple, and how that decision has affected their lives.

After some discussion we all moved into a big circle and had everyone scoop a small dixie cup full of m&m’s.  We then went around and one at a time picked out a single m&m, and shared a thought that correlated with the color of the candy and the chart below.

Some examples: If a red candy is picked up, you would share a quality you look (or looked) for in your “Mister Marvelous”. An orange candy would have you share a marvelous quality you hope to cultivate in yourself. Blue is for sharing ways we can be united in our spiritual progression. Green is for things that we would enjoy learning with a spouse. Yellow is to share a silly story about anything, and brown is to share an idea for how to resolve conflict or overcome a trial or hardship.

I had another poster prepared (with ideas inspired by Sugardoodle), just for fun, to talk more about the girls themselves: Marvelous Me! This would be fun for any get-to-know you activity.

You can download both posters here.

Calendars and planners

I am knee-deep in calendaring today, getting things organized for our young women group in 2012. I now have conference dates, youth dances, girls camp, Sunday lessons, birthdays and value focuses all in one place. It feels great!

I was then reminded of my mini planner for November, and realized I hadn’t shared that yet. So here it is: You can find the November mini planner here. Instructions for folding here.

Is anyone else thinking about 2012 already?

Birthday Hope

My sweet Hope is turning 4 this week, and was asked by her preschool teachers to bring in a poster to display in their classroom. It will be in the “Me Museum” all week. It was fun to pick out some old photos and to take some new ones, exploring her love of dress up, playing with sisters, library books, playdough and candy!

We like to celebrate birthdays first thing in the morning, with presents and balloons with breakfast. I usually scribble out a quick “Happy Birthday” poster to hang on the birthday girl’s chair – but I am thinking this should be a new tradition: each year make a collage of photos that celebrate the birthday child, and have everyone in the family write things they love about her on the poster. The poster could be displayed all through the birthday month.

We are so blessed to have each other, and seeing these photos remind me of the joy we have together. Hope was born almost one year exactly after our dear son, Henry, passed away. We named her Hope in honor of that which we feel to be together as a family forever. Through the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, family joy can be eternal. I am grateful to have Hope in that.

Halloween 2011

Halloween – I love it and dread it. The candy – awesome and terrible. The costumes – adorable and overwhelming. My babies wore a different costume to every event we went to. It was amusing to see what the mood of the day was. All our costumes were fairly simple to throw together – with the exception of the owl, which was almost completely cut out and sewn together by my oldest daughter. We were inspired by the birds of Pinterest – and found it came together much more quickly than we had imagined! Hope your Halloween was a treat as well.

Photo booth in place

We had a great night – the photo booth came together nicely, and I was glad I had plenty of masking tape, clothespins and dowel rods to hold everything together. Hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween!

Photo booth prep

Tonight is our Ward Halloween party, and I have been asked to do a photo booth for the evening. I do a lot of outdoor portraits, but indoor, nighttime shooting makes me feel a little nervous. I’m not sure exactly how we will work out the lighting situation, but I am excited to decorate my photobooth wall. I’ve spent several evenings in crafting bliss, playing with fabric, paper and thread. I used the tutorial here to make ruffled crepe paper streamers. This was so easy , and they streamers turned out exquisitely. Seriously yummy. Can’t wait to unroll these and drape them.

I got very excited when I found gray tissue paper at the dollar store to make a mini pom pom garland. I was inspired for this here.

And I couldn’t resist making a pennant banner to top it all off. That orange polka dot fabric makes me happy.

Now all that’s left is to figure out how and where to drape and light, and I’m hoping we’ll have some great photos to remember the kids, costumes and evening.
